Editor's Take:
Napoleon II was born to inherit an empire and spent his short life in a gilded cage. After his father's fall he was raised at the Austrian court, where his grandfather Emperor Francis I kept him well away from French politics. He was even given a German title. Bonapartists in France treated him as their rightful ruler and dreamed of his return. Instead he grew into a quiet young officer with poor health. His early death in 1832 passed the Bonaparte claim to his cousin, who later ruled as Napoleon III.
