Editor's Take:
Maurice Ravel wrote some of the most precisely crafted music of the 20th century. He grew up in Paris, the son of a Swiss engineer and a Basque mother, and studied at the Paris Conservatoire. He failed repeatedly to win the Prix de Rome, and the last refusal became a public scandal. His piano works, including Pavane for a Dead Princess and Gaspard de la nuit, showed dazzling colour and control. He was a master orchestrator, and his arrangement of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition is the version most often played. His ballet Daphnis and Chloé and his two piano concertos remain concert favourites. Boléro, written in 1928, became one of the most famous pieces of classical music. A brain disorder silenced him in his final years.
