Editor's Take:
Kendrick Lamar is widely seen as the most important rapper of his generation. His albums work like novels, tracing life in Compton through shifting voices and characters. To Pimp a Butterfly mixed jazz, funk and spoken word, and its song Alright became an anthem at protests against police violence. The Pulitzer jury that honoured DAMN. signalled how far hip-hop had moved into the cultural mainstream. His public feud with Drake in 2024 produced Not Like Us, a huge hit. He has won more than twenty Grammy Awards.
