Editor's Take:
Julie Andrews had one of the purest voices in musical theatre. As a teenager she was already a West End star. Hollywood passed her over for the film of My Fair Lady. She answered by winning an Oscar for Mary Poppins the same year. The Sound of Music then became one of the most popular films ever. Throat surgery in 1997 damaged her singing voice. She carried on acting, directing and writing children's books with her daughter.
