Editor's Take:
John Amos Comenius believed that education could heal a broken world. He lived through the Thirty Years' War as a refugee and lost his family and library more than once. Yet he wrote with hope. He argued for schools open to every child, for teaching in the mother tongue, and for learning through pictures and real objects. These ideas were radical in the 1600s. Today they sound ordinary, which shows how far he was ahead of his time.
