Jean-Luc Godard cast him in Breathless in 1960, and his casual cool became iconic. He also worked with Truffaut and Melville. Then he moved to big action films, doing his own stunts. That Man from Rio and Le Professionnel drew millions. He was nicknamed Bébel. France held a national tribute for him when he died.
