Harper Lee wrote one novel that changed how millions think about justice. She grew up in Monroeville, Alabama, the daughter of a lawyer, and was childhood friends with Truman Capote. She moved to New York and worked as an airline clerk. Friends gave her a year's wages so she could write. To Kill a Mockingbird, published in 1960, tells of a lawyer defending a Black man falsely accused of rape. It won the Pulitzer Prize and became a classic film. She avoided publicity for decades. A second novel, Go Set a Watchman, appeared in 2015.
