Editor's Take:
Grigori Rasputin rose from a Siberian village to the heart of the Russian court. He was a wandering holy man with little education and a magnetic presence. The empress Alexandra believed he could ease the bleeding of her son Alexei, who had haemophilia. That trust gave him huge influence over the imperial family. His drinking and scandals made him hated by the nobility and the public. During the First World War, rumours about him badly damaged the monarchy. A group of aristocrats murdered him in December 1916. Within three months, the Tsar had fallen.
Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin (21 January 1869 – 30 December 1916) was a Russian mystic and faith healer. He is best known for having befriended the imperial family of Nicholas II, the last Emperor of Russia, through whom he gained considerable influence in the final years of the Russian Empire.
