Editor's Take:
Graham Greene wrote thrillers and serious novels with the same moral intensity. He grew up in Berkhamsted, where his father was headmaster, and was deeply unhappy at school. He converted to Catholicism in his twenties, and faith, guilt and betrayal fill his books. Brighton Rock, The Power and the Glory and The End of the Affair are his best known. He worked for MI6 during the Second World War. He travelled restlessly to places in crisis, from Mexico to Vietnam. He wrote the screenplay for the classic film The Third Man.
