Editor's Take:

Gerhard Schröder led Germany from 1998 to 2005. He grew up poor, never knew his father and studied law at night school. As Social Democratic chancellor he formed Germany's first government with the Greens. His Agenda 2010 reforms cut benefits and loosened the job market. They were unpopular with his own party but many economists credit them with Germany's later strength. He refused to join the Iraq War in 2003. After leaving office he took top jobs with Russian energy firms, which badly damaged his reputation.
