Editor's Take:
Georg Simon Ohm was a schoolteacher when he made a discovery used every day by engineers. Using his own home-made instruments, he showed that current is proportional to voltage and inversely proportional to resistance. German scientists at first dismissed his work as too speculative. Recognition came from abroad when the Royal Society honoured him. He won a professorship only late in life. Today his name is printed on every resistor.
