Editor's Take:
Friedrich Hayek was the twentieth century's most famous defender of free markets. He served in the Austro-Hungarian army in the First World War, then studied in Vienna. At the London School of Economics he clashed with John Maynard Keynes over the causes of depressions. In 1944 he published The Road to Serfdom, warning that central economic planning leads to tyranny. Prices, he argued, carry knowledge no planner could ever gather. He was out of fashion for decades. Then he shared the 1974 Nobel Prize in economics, and his ideas inspired Thatcher and Reagan.
