Editor's Take:

Francis II spent much of his reign at war with France and losing. Defeat after defeat by Napoleon cost Austria territory and pride. He dissolved the thousand-year-old Holy Roman Empire rather than see Napoleon claim it. Marrying his daughter to his enemy bought time. After Napoleon's fall, Vienna became the centre of the European settlement under his minister Metternich. At home he ruled cautiously, suspicious of any reform.
