Editor's Take:
Eugene O'Neill made American theatre serious. He was born in a New York hotel room, the son of a touring actor. He spent his youth drifting, working as a sailor and drinking heavily. He began writing plays while recovering from tuberculosis. With the Provincetown Players he staged bold, experimental work. He won four Pulitzer Prizes. His greatest play, Long Day's Journey into Night, laid bare his own tormented family. He insisted it not be performed until after his death. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1936.
