Enver Hoxha turned Albania into one of the most isolated countries on earth. He split with every ally in turn, convinced the world was plotting invasion. He ordered vast numbers of concrete bunkers, many of which still dot the landscape. His secret police jailed, exiled or killed thousands of people. Religion was banned and travel abroad was forbidden. Albania emerged from his rule poor and traumatised. His statues fell quickly after communism ended in 1991.
