Editor's Take:
Edmund Husserl wanted philosophy to start again from the simplest thing: how things appear to us. His phenomenology asked people to describe experience carefully before theorising about it. The method shaped Heidegger, Sartre, Merleau-Ponty and much of twentieth-century thought. As a Jew under Nazi rule he was barred from his university. He died in 1938. A Franciscan priest smuggled his huge archive of shorthand manuscripts to Belgium. Scholars are still editing and publishing it today.
