Editor's Take:
Beatrix brought a professional, hardworking style to the Dutch throne. Her marriage to a German was controversial so soon after the Second World War. Prince Claus later became one of the most popular royals. As Queen she took her constitutional role seriously and was known for being well briefed. Like her mother and grandmother before her, she chose to abdicate. She handed over to her son after 33 years. She remains active in culture and charity.
