Editor's Take:
Ayrton Senna is remembered by many as the greatest Formula One driver ever. He grew up in a wealthy São Paulo family and started karting at four. He reached F1 in 1984 and soon showed staggering speed, especially in the rain. At McLaren his rivalry with Alain Prost became one of sport's most bitter feuds. He won the world championship in 1988, 1990 and 1991. He set 65 pole positions. He died after crashing at the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola in May 1994, aged 34. Brazil declared three days of national mourning.
