Editor's Take:
The Duke of Wellington was a careful, practical general who hated waste. He hated wasted lives most of all. He chose strong positions, looked after supplies and waited for his enemies to make mistakes. That approach wore down the French in Spain and finally beat Napoleon at Waterloo. As Prime Minister he was less successful, opposing reform but conceding Catholic emancipation. He was nicknamed the Iron Duke. His funeral drew vast crowds in London.
