Editor's Take:
Arthur Conan Doyle created a detective so convincing that readers wrote letters to him at 221B Baker Street as if he were real. A trained doctor, he modelled Sherlock Holmes's sharp powers of deduction partly on Joseph Bell, one of his lecturers at Edinburgh University. Doyle grew so tired of Holmes that he killed him off at the Reichenbach Falls in 1893, only to bring him back after a public outcry. He also wrote historical novels, science fiction, including The Lost World, and passionate campaigns against miscarriages of justice. In later life he became a dedicated believer in spiritualism.
