Editor's Take:
Anne Frank's diary has given millions of readers a personal window into the horror of the Holocaust. A Jewish girl whose family had fled Germany, she hid with them for more than two years in a secret annexe above her father's business in Amsterdam. Her writing is funny, honest and thoughtful, full of hopes for the future like that of any teenager. The family was betrayed in 1944 and deported, and she died in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp at 15. Her father, the only survivor, published the diary, which has since been translated into around seventy languages.
