Editor's Take:
Andrei Tarkovsky made films that move at the pace of thought. Rain, fire, mirrors and long silences fill his slow, dreamlike scenes. He believed cinema could capture time itself. Soviet censors cut and delayed his work. He eventually stayed in the West, where he made his last two films. He died of cancer at 54. Directors from Ingmar Bergman onward have called him one of the greatest filmmakers. His book Sculpting in Time is still read by film students.
