Alfred Adler founded individual psychology. A doctor in Vienna, he joined Sigmund Freud's circle in 1902. He broke away in 1911, rejecting Freud's focus on sex. Adler argued that people are driven by the wish to overcome feelings of weakness and belong to a community. He introduced the idea of the inferiority complex. He also studied the effect of birth order on personality. He set up child guidance clinics in Vienna. He moved to the United States in the 1930s and died in Aberdeen during a lecture tour.
