The Russo-Ukrainian War, 2014
Crimea, Donbas and the start of a long conflict
In February 2014, after mass protests in Kyiv toppled Ukraine's pro-Russian president, Russian troops without insignia seized the Crimean peninsula. Within weeks Russia annexed it following a referendum that most of the world refused to recognise.
Fighting then broke out in the eastern Donbas region, where Russian-backed separatists declared breakaway republics. Peace deals agreed in Minsk failed to end the fighting, and thousands were killed over the following years. The conflict escalated dramatically in February 2022, when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Did you know?In July 2014, Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board.
The 13th anniversary falls on February 20, 2027.
