A campus debate that ended in tragedy
On 10 September 2025, conservative activist Charlie Kirk, 31, was shot while speaking to a large outdoor crowd at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. Kirk was taking questions from students at a debate event when a single shot was fired from a nearby rooftop. He died shortly afterwards.
Kirk was the co-founder of Turning Point USA, one of the largest conservative youth organisations in America. A 22-year-old suspect was arrested after a manhunt and charged with aggravated murder. The killing shocked the country and prompted widespread calls to reduce political violence.
