US Presidential Election, 2024
The comeback election
The race was turned upside down in July 2024, when President Joe Biden withdrew and his vice-president, Kamala Harris, became the Democratic candidate with just over 100 days to go. That same month, Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
On 5 November, Trump and his running mate JD Vance won all seven key swing states, taking 312 electoral votes to Harris's 226. He also won the national popular vote, the first Republican to do so in 20 years. Inflation, immigration and the economy dominated voters' concerns.
Did you know?Trump became only the second president, after Grover Cleveland in 1892, to win two non-consecutive terms.
The 2nd anniversary falls on November 5, 2026.
