Defeat by Japan in 1905 sparked revolution, and he was forced to accept a parliament. His family's reliance on the mystic Rasputin damaged the monarchy. He took personal command of the army in the First World War, and was blamed for its failures. He abdicated in 1917. The Bolsheviks shot him and his family in Yekaterinburg the next year.
